After the Ohio State Buckeyes’ rough offensive performance against the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Week 9, head coach Ryan Day and the rest of the team were a little disappointed in Saturday’s game against the Penn State Nittany Lions. Adjustments may be necessary.
Former Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer offered insight into the changes he would make to the offense during an episode of his podcast, “The Triple Option.”

Meyer started the plan by discussing the run game and how to simplify it going forward.
“First of all, we simplify the run game. Right zone, left zone, power right power left, that’s it. And I also run a right gap scheme, left gap scheme. That’s it.”
– Urban Meyer
In addition to a simplified rushing attack with running backs Quinshon Judkins and Treveyon Henderson, Meyer believes offensive coordinator Chip Kelly should use quarterback Will Howard more in the run game. are.
“But I run the quarterback 15 to 20 times, because the ultimate equalizer is that guy. When he runs the ball, that’s how you tip your hat. So, you snap right to him. , we do replays on every play. They didn’t do that yet. “

The former three-time national champion has had much success as a two-way quarterback, including coaching college football legend Tim Tebow during his time with the Florida Gators.
Meyer also believes the offense should utilize Howard’s legs in the passing game, as the Buckeyes have struggled in pass protection recently.
“The passing game. The most dangerous place is in that pocket. You saw last week that Will Howard had a few tattoos. He could barely touch his back foot on the ground in five steps. There have been several times. And people have been doing that on his, you know, lap. ”
– Urban Meyer
Ohio State’s offensive line has been hit by a number of injuries this season, and their pass protection is starting to struggle. Meyer went on to give an example of a play call that freed Howard from the pocket.
“So, you’re going to get him out…the first one is the easiest one, sprint out. No stress on the O-line at all, power on the tailback or tight end to block the edge.” And, by the way, the quarterback is on edge.”

Another play design proposed by Meyer was a break-contain pass with a naked and boot in a play-action game, giving Howard an opportunity to complete the throw outside the pocket.
The Buckeyes will be tested again in Week 10 when they take on Penn State. The Nittany Lions’ defense features star players such as edge rushers Abdul Carter and Dani Dennis Sutton.
