Voters will head to the polls in two weeks, and one organization is working to ensure that more of those voters are representative of the LGBTQ community.
Vogue the Vote in Newark is the first event series of its kind in New Jersey. This is a Newark Pride program aimed at educating LGBTQ voters between the ages of 17 and 34.
Campaign Chair Alonzo S. Blaylock told News 12, “This is more than just a campaign about voting in a presidential election. This is for people who don’t feel their voices are being heard. It’s about creating a space and a platform for them.”
He came up with this as a way to join the Ballroom community, which is made up of various houses run primarily by non-binary and transgender women of color for young creators. “They will also have a dance battle, which we know as voguing,” he said.
“Most of those children come from disenfranchised environments that require a lot of care,” Blaylock said.
He added that members often feel silenced when it comes to politics and misinformation. That’s why Vogue the Vote offers Pride events that educate people about why they vote, housing, and principles about specific policies that impact the LGBTQ population.
They have already held several events throughout October and will begin offering workshops in January in preparation for state and midterm elections. “This is open to everyone.
