Wes Jenkins, winner of the 2024 Her Universe Fashion Show, used more than 600 used Barbie clothes to create his winning design.
Mattel’s 10th Annual Her Universe Fashion Show kicked off San Diego Comic-Con with a standing-room-only crowd and an unforgettable evening of fashion and fandom. Throughout the night, 25 designers showcased stunning creations inspired by iconic fandom and pop culture characters, including Barbie, Beetlejuice, Magic 8 Ball, Monster High, Popples and more. From exquisite craftsmanship to boundary-pushing designs, every piece celebrated the power of imagination and celebrated many milestone anniversaries, including 65 years of Barbie, 35 years of Polly Pocket and 80 years of Mattel.

In an interview, Jenkins said the inspiration for the design came from her childhood obsession with her mother’s Barbie clothing collection. “I was just so fascinated by these tiny clothes,” Jenkins said. “I was like, I’m used to having the tiniest thing in the room, and these were even smaller.”
Jenkins’ design is a true labor of love that took countless hours to complete. The dress’ bodice and sleeves are made from Barbie’s light pink clothing, while the skirt is a gradient from light to dark pink. Each piece of the outfit was carefully chosen and positioned to create a unified, visually stunning design.
In addition to the dress, Jenkins also designed a pink blazer for herself. Although the blazer was a last-minute addition to the design, Jenkins was determined to have a matching outfit for the show. Jenkins’ win at the Her Universe Fashion Show is a testament to her creativity and talent. Her Barbie-inspired design is a unique and beautiful work of art that pays tribute to the famous doll and her fashion heritage.
Jenkins is excited to see what the future holds for their designs, and he looks forward to working with Hot Topic and Her Universe to bring their geek fashion ideas to fans around the world.
