British singer Charlie offered Rolling Stone UK a helpful explanation for this viral aesthetic. According to Charlie, Brat Summer is “about this kind of behavior that everyone is adopting on the internet, whether that’s trolling on Twitter or dancing to Addison Rae on TikTok,” she explained. “There’s an element of this shameless, unashamed, self-centered content being made, but I think underneath it there are a lot of people who use that as a layer of defense,” she continued. “Sassiness is a veil. You’re only sassy if you’re rebelling against something that makes you feel even a little uneasy.”
