“Do Well by Do Good” Scholarship Program for IU Northwest Alumni
Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana and the Northwest Indiana Urban League have teamed up to support local high school graduates who want to earn a degree from Indiana University Northwest.
Through this partnership, any graduating student from the Gary-based high school will be eligible to receive the “Do Well by Doing Good” scholarship, a full tuition-only scholarship for students pursuing an associate or bachelor’s degree at IU Northwest.
On Wednesday, July 17, Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana President Matt Shufert presented Vanessa Allen McLeod, president and CEO of the Urban League of Northwest Indiana, with an oversized guitar-shaped check for $250,000 to fund the program.
The Urban League of Northwest Indiana serves as the fiscal agent and scholarship administrator for the scholarship fund and will award funds to eligible IU Northwest students.
Based on the FAFSA, scholarship recipients will receive IU Northwest tuition coverage for up to four years.
“Showing young people that their potential is limitless is the goal of the Do Well by Doing Good scholarship program, and Hard Rock is proud to play its role in making that happen,” said Shufert.
“Research shows that for many first-generation and low-income students attending college, a lack of funding can be a barrier to their education,” McLeod said. “This generous donation from Hard Rock is an effort to remove financial barriers for Gary students looking to pursue their career goals.”
