The T-Tauri triple star system produces beautiful celestial light from the heat of its gravitational contraction. Learn more from Astronomy Now.
The T-Tauri stars are named after a protostar of the same name in the constellation Taurus. Coincidentally, these T-Tauri stars, collectively known as HP Tau, are also in Taurus and were photographed with the Nicholas U. Mayall 4-meter Telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona. All three stars are clearly visible and lie in this eerie nebula 550 light-years away. This is not a star birth nebula, but rather a reflection nebula because it is a cloud of dust that is reflecting the starlight of HP Tau.
