Chucks have an unusual win – rain-aided five-inning victory
The Chucks won the first game of their home series against Lake Shore after the game was stopped by rain midway through the sixth inning, with the Chucks leading 5-4 and officially earning their 40th win of the season.
Chucks starter Edwin Aricia (Nova Southeastern University) threw 39 pitches, gave up three runs in the first inning and was unable to return in the second inning. Garrett Brogdon (Simpson University) was brought on to pitch the remainder of the game.
The Chucks scored three runs in the second inning on hits from Edian Espinal (UCF), Max Galvin and Luke Pemberton. Galvin had an RBI and Sam Fisher (FIU), Espinal and Brady Jargela (Mankato) each scored. The Chucks tied the game at 3-3.
Brogdon pitched four innings, striking out seven, and only allowed one run in the fifth inning to give the Chinooks a 3-4 lead. The Chucks’ offense had a big day in the fifth inning.
The game started with Espinal hitting his second home run of the season. A homer through the right side, the switch-hitter has homered both left-handed and right-handed. Espinal tied the game at 4-4. Two batters later, Home Run Derby contestant Max Solis Jr. (Kansas) hit his sixth home run of the season to take a 5-4 lead.
The two home runs proved to be significant. After the Chinooks’ leadoff hitter flied out in the top of the sixth, rain and thunder at Athletic Park caused the game to be postponed. The rain continued, and the Chucks were victorious.
