summary

In A Violent Nature 2 must avoid the same fate as the Friday the 13th sequels and focus on originality and consistency. IFC Films is set to release the sequel to In A Violent Nature after the original’s mixed success at SDCC 2024. Learning from the failure of Friday the 13th’s narrative inconsistencies, In A Violent Nature must maintain its critical acclaim.

The newly announced sequel, In a Violent Nature, should avoid the biggest mistake the Friday the 13th series made. In one of the biggest announcements of SDCC 2024, Shudder and IFC Films announced that a sequel to In a Violent Nature, one of the most polarizing horror movies of the year, is already in development. The Friday the 13th-level slasher horror film, essentially told through the eyes of the killer, could soon become an up-and-coming horror franchise.

IFC Films also released a teaser photo to accompany the announcement made during the “Bold Voices in Modern Horror” panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 26, 2024. It was also announced that the original In A Violent Nature will be available to stream on Shudder starting Friday, September 13, 2024. The slasher horror will be written and directed by Chris Nash, who will also write and direct the franchise sequel.

The phenomenal yet limited A24 horror series was supposed to see Charlize Theron make her TV debut as Pamela Voorhees in the Friday the 13th prequels.

The In A Violent Nature sequel will be better than the Friday the 13th sequels

Since the original was panned, there’s been a Friday the 13th movie every other week.

In a Violent Nature 2 must avoid the same fate as the Friday the 13th series, which remains iconic despite many of its films being panned. The original Friday the 13th, made in 1980, is the only one to receive good reviews. It’s an origin story for Jason Voorhees, and is interesting because it focuses more on Jason’s murderous mother than the legendary hockey masked figure. All of the other Friday the 13th films have been poorly received, some more than others.

Like the original Friday the 13th, which received a high score of 66% on Rotten Tomatoes, In A Violent Nature received mixed reviews from audiences but positive reviews from critics. In A Violent Nature’s Certified Fresh critics score of 78% was well above its audience score of 44%, making it the most polarizing film of the year. Let’s hope history doesn’t repeat itself with the up-and-coming horror series.

RELATED: Violent Nature cleverly subverts typical horror movie expectations

Shudder’s new horror film, In A Violent Nature, cleverly subverts the tropes of traditional slasher films, reinventing a classic subgenre in the process.

What A Violent Nature 2 can learn from the Friday the 13th sequels

The Friday the 13th sequels are plagued by narrative inconsistencies and frequent changes to the original film.

A major problem with the Friday the 13th film series was narrative inconsistencies and frequent retconning of the original films, which ultimately chipped away at the promise and prestige of the franchise. Some of the later sequels even placed Jason in ridiculously out-of-place environments, like Manhattan or even space. It felt like the franchise was making fun of itself as it went along. In A Violent Nature would be wise to stay true to what worked in the original and make improvements to maintain the franchise’s critically acclaimed status.
