“Black professionals face widespread discrimination and prejudice, evidence of the historically racist and exclusionary nature of the fashion industry,” the Fashion Council for Black Rights said. The campaign’s first report states:

The report examines 30 companies of varying sizes, all of which are anonymous. It aimed to measure company policies and practices related to the inclusion of Black employees.

All involved participated in a survey that answered questions about current diversity, equity, and inclusion policies and practices, and the results were conclusive about the discrimination faced by Black people in the fashion industry.

“The fashion world has long supported white supremacist ideology and created and glorified standards of beauty and artistic expression that are explicitly anti-Black,” the report said.

This report will be conducted every year from now on, and all 30 companies involved are participating in the Black In Fashion Pledge, which will continue to participate for three years. The Black in Fashion Council and its partners also help brands develop strategies and initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion of Black people working in the fashion community.

According to the report, Black consumers spend approximately $1.3 trillion each year and contribute significantly to the economy. “Blackness is often commodified for profit, but Black people, Black experiences, and Black voices are rarely given space outside of performance in the fashion industry,” the report explains. , adding, “Their talents, ideas and passions are being stolen, exploited and exploited.” Appropriated.”

Lindsay Peoples Wagner, co-founder of Black in Fashion, said the report highlights “the important work we’ve been doing behind the scenes to ensure companies are implementing inclusive policies.” He said it was reflected.

“Over the past year, so many companies have realized that it’s not enough to just post a black square or post a quote on MLK Day. , an infrastructure and cultural transformation that forces companies to reexamine their values and values is a priority when it comes to DEI.”
