And yesterday we saw Kim Jones announce Dior’s latest collection, a collaboration with Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo, through a series of videos. By featuring only black models, we address the issue of diversity on the catwalk.
“This is not political. We started this in December,” the menswear designer told the Guardian. “But one thing a designer can do is [reflect] For me, diversity comes naturally. It reflects the wider world. ”

The collection was presented through a series of films, some shot in Jones’ home London, some at Boafo’s studio in Ghana, and others more in line with traditional catwalk settings.
The collection is titled “Portraits of the Artist,” and the designs directly reflect Boafo’s paintings, with some of his work printed on clothing.
“I really, really love his work and have wanted to work with an African artist for a long time because I grew up in Africa and African art has always been important to me,” Jones said. This is explained in Boafo’s film. On the other hand, the artist said that what he found most interesting about the project was “how we were able to transfer it.” [his] Techniques for finger painting clothes.

“There’s a Breton stripe underneath the Amoako print, so it’s French, Ghanaian, Dior and Amoako all together,” Jones told British Vogue. “This is an exchange. I think people need to learn who their consumers are and understand that people in different parts of the world can create more exciting things.”
Jones’ digital presentation is not Dior’s first virtual fashion week. Last week, Dior unveiled its fall/winter 2020 haute couture story through the fashion film Le Meet Dior, under the direction of womenswear artistic director Maria Grazia Chiuri.
