Gen Z voters turn their ballots into memes by writing in ridiculous candidates

This is a representative image (Photo courtesy of Reuters) Young voters participating in the presidential election are creating a new social media trend. Gen Zers are sharing unconventional ballot options on platforms like TikTok, writing in the names of internet celebrities and pop culture figures.
“Go vote, this is the most important election of our lifetimes,” content creator Braden Boyko shared on X after Twitch streamer Dream filled out his ballot.
Social media platforms have shown voters writing a variety of entertainment figures on their ballots, including Tanka Jahari from Impractical Jokers and singer Taylor Swift. It’s a similar pattern to previous elections, which elected figures like Kanye West in 2020 and Harambe in 2016.
The move sparked criticism online, with users expressing their displeasure through comments, calling the move irresponsible and counterproductive.
“Please don’t recommend this to people,” one person on TikTok urged.
“It sucks,” said another.
“This is irresponsible. That’s not what people mean when they go to vote. This is a really important election and your vote matters,” someone else said.
Another user commented: “What a waste.”
These ballot entries can have legal ramifications beyond social media reactions.
Each state has different regulations regarding taking photographs of ballots. Some states prohibit taking photos of completed ballots, which could result in penalties, while others, like California, allow people to take selfies of their ballots.
Gen Z is also participating in other election-related activities, such as voting strategically to counteract family votes in the race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.
NBC News poll data shows Harris leading among Gen Z voters, with about 50% of 2,119 young respondents backing her, compared to about 33% supporting Trump. % support.
Trump’s appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast has garnered significant viewership, while Harris’ campaign is leveraging TikTok to connect with younger voters. Jessica Siles of Voters of Tomorrow said Harris’ presidential announcement sparked significant online interest and increased voter registration.
