The rhetoric that French women dress well is apt, and urban style is just one aspect they have mastered. When I moved to Paris, I was shocked to discover that in the summer, Parisians would flock to the nearby countryside to experience the slow life, dressed elegantly in floral dresses, Breton prints, and lots of linen.
I’ve been lucky enough to venture outside the city three times now, marveling at its vast landscapes and researching outfits for the typical activities (mountain climbing, village strolls, quaint market towns, and, best of all, conversation-boosting aperitifs), and each time I return with a comprehensive list detailing what to pack and what not to pack on my next trip to the French countryside.
I reasoned about the importance of not worrying about how I dress. This is a hard truth to swallow for someone who identifies as “overdressed” like me, but it steers me in the direction of outfitting in one fell swoop. A significant portion of my wardrobe (and, consequently, my holiday capsule) consists of dresses, and summer is a time when I gravitate toward easy-going styles that can be elevated when needed.
I tweaked my packing list to include versatile pieces that fit my sense of style, fuss-free fabrics, and options for formal events. Keep reading for my countryside packing edit. Versatile, easy-to-wear, and fashion-forward pieces (like bold earrings) will not only make you feel your best while on vacation, but also work well for relaxed activities. Sure, you’ll need to stick to a dress-centric theme, but this is the easiest, most cohesive option. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

Expandable Check-in Medium
I try to choose medium-sized suitcases, especially when travelling by car. The trick is to pack smart and light while still having space for souvenirs (i.e. fromage) when you leave. I am familiar with the sturdy Monos models and particularly like the expandable gusset of the latest models.
Chelsea 4 Packing Cubes, Taupe
I never travel without my packing cubes, and the Antler boasts one of the sleekest designs on the market. The double zipper feature and creamy taupe color make it equal parts chic and functional.
Nere cosmetic case with travel bottle
This two-tiered cosmetic case comes with travel-sized bottles – one section for makeup and the other for skincare.
Sarong: linen, lapis lazuli blue
With Nothing Underneath’s arsenal is a menswear-inspired shirt made with lots of cotton, silk, and linen. I’ve owned this style for a few years now and love the relaxed fit and how it’s perfect for a laid-back summer look. Lapis Lazuli is a unique colorway, and this style features an understated weave that sets it apart from the standard poplin blue. Most recently, With Nothing Underneath introduced a matching sarong.
Palm Noosa knows how to create flattering dresses, from cocoa hues and loud seashell prints to halter necklines and subtle ties that reveal the décolletage.
Katherina shirred cotton voile midi dress
Doon’s style offers a romantic interpretation and is synonymous with slow life and cottagecore aesthetics. Puff sleeves and billowy skirts exude femininity. No country look is complete without a ruched dress.
Iggy polka dot midi dress
Deep navy, yoke-like yellow and sheer lace add a modern twist to the classic black and white polka dot pattern.
Catania bitter chocolate linen strapless dress
The bandeau silhouette is poised to be the hottest summer trend of 2022, and is here to stay because it’s timeless and seasonally appropriate. I especially love the combination of the prom dress silhouette with its easy-to-wear elements and fuss-free linen fabric.
Few brands have mastered the barely-dressed look quite like Realisation Par, so it’s rightfully earned its place as the ultimate summer dress brand. I incorporate a piece from the collection into my existing wardrobe every few years; it’s a must-have for warmer days, with sheer fabrics offering breathability while staying ahead of the trend. Realisation Par’s latest prints are subtle nods to floral dresses, but the plunging shapes, ’90s slips and botanical prints are unmistakable themes of the ’00s renaissance.
Layered Asymmetric Mini Skirt
My usual style is a midi length, but in summer I try out shrunken hem lengths because, after all, it suits the climate.
Living in Paris, it’s impossible not to fall in love with the mini style. The mini dress acts as a wardrobe staple and can be paired with a variety of shoe options, from canvas trainers to heeled sandals.
Triomphe oval-frame tortoiseshell acetate sunglasses
Over the years, I’ve learned the importance of accessories. A classic pair of sunglasses will last a lifetime. Celine’s Triomphe Oval model is my frame of choice. With a rounded cat eye and colored frame, they exude vintage elegance and complement most outfits. They remain a very popular item among Celine’s entry-level designer goods.
Santa Rosa woven leather shoulder bag
Come June (weather permitting) my bag will be swapped for a knitted one and from the auburn hue to the long braided handles it is just perfect.
A pair of exaggerated earrings is essential for the summer holiday season, and Kitty Joyous’ twisted pearl jewelry is just the thing.
The basket bag is a vacation essential. The style was pioneered by French tastemakers (notably Jane Birkin) starting in the ’60s and remains just as relevant decades later. Wicket bags are originally French, but the soft-shell raffia is a natural progression. Most importantly, their timeless versatility makes them much easier to pack and more likely to be worn for years to come.

The options are plentiful: try threading this chic accessory through your hair or tying it on the corner of your purse.
There are many different types of flip flops available this season, but these from Reformation feature a padded sole for extra comfort.
If you want an element of formality to the aforementioned outfit, a small heel would be perfect. Dining options are plentiful in the French countryside.

You can’t go wrong with Allbirds. When it comes to comfort and sustainability, Allbirds is the go-to brand.

Tona specializes in fashion-forward, inclusive swimwear suitable for D-FF cup breasts.
Vintage Fit Sweatshirt – Ice Grey
You’d be hard pressed to find a sweatshirt more supple than navy grey, and the sophisticated loungewear piece is perfect for off-duty or sophisticated ensembles. My favourite styling tip is to add chunky earrings.
It may be summer, but being British I’m prepared for all eventualities and the weather in France is not much different. A lightweight rain jacket takes up very little space in your pack and will keep you dry even in the most unprecedented downpours.
Aurora Light Shape Leggings
From country walks to working out or lounging at home, Wolford’s Aurora leggings are the staple piece you’ve been missing.
Steamer Backpack – Black
Versatility is key when traveling, and this modern backpack offers a practical solution to prevent spills while also being useful for picnics and long days out.
