New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu has signed a series of discriminatory bills that directly target our LGBTQ youth, especially transgender children, in our “free or die” state. These measures are not only a setback, but a blatant attack on the rights and dignity of our young people that creates division and perpetuates harm. ACLU New Hampshire Executive Director Devon Chafee said, “These unconstitutional bills, now signed into law, are a cynical attack on some of our state’s most vulnerable young people and will have a devastating impact on transgender and LGBTQ+ students who already face discrimination and isolation just for being who they are. Our politicians continue to fail transgender youth. These laws are not actually about fair sports, healthy classrooms, or overall well-being, but rather about imposing discriminatory views and excluding transgender people from public life.” We condemn Governor Sununu for signing these bills and stand with transgender and LGBTQ+ New Hampshire residents and their families. We cannot and will not allow politicians to strip away their rights.” GLSEN Executive Director Melanie Willingham Jaggers concluded, “Governor Sununu’s decision to sign a series of bills that target LGBTQ+ youth is a huge misstep, especially on the eve of the renewal of Title IX protections that protect LGBTQ+ students from discriminatory school policies. The laws Governor Sununu approved are designed to marginalize and stigmatize some of our most vulnerable children, denying them their fundamental right to a safe and supportive learning environment. This is a betrayal of New Hampshire’s values of freedom and fairness. To New Hampshire’s LGBTQ+ youth, we see you. We stand with you, and we will never stop fighting for your right to live authentically and without fear. We are not going to let these cruel policies go unchallenged.”
