MILWAUKEE — When former President Trump walked up to former Fire Chief Cory Comperatore’s gear and kissed his helmet during his speech at the Republican National Convention Thursday night, eagle-eyed observers may have noticed a small, odd detail: Comperatore’s name was misspelled on his firefighter’s jacket.
This error is not the fault of the Trump campaign, and it’s not new: It was made years ago, and Comperatore chose to let it remain.
The Buffalo Township Fire Department, where Comperatore served as chief, took a clear stance earlier this week.
“The name on his jacket was spelled incorrectly a few years ago but Corey left it as is. Corey has not changed it and will leave it as is. As confusing as it may be, it was Corey’s choice to change it and he did not change it,” the company said in a Facebook comment after sharing a photo of the gear on display outside the fire station.

Comperatore died last Saturday while trying to shield his family from an assassin’s bullets at a President Trump rally.
His funeral took place on Friday.
