For many people, nothing says summer like amusement parks, sunbathing, cold drinks, and lounging by the water. But encountering scorching heat while traveling can make it hard to enjoy all your favorite activities. The answer: coolcations. Find out why this travel trend has become a popular summer vacation choice and the five best U.S. destinations for your next coolcation.
What is Coolcation?

Sunny beach destinations continue to attract tourists looking to lounge on the sand or swim in lakes and oceans, but some people are starting to ditch these popular spots in favor of another option: coolcations.
This new buzzword is gaining popularity in the travel industry and is used to describe trips to warm- or cool-weather destinations, especially for those looking to book a summer getaway. (Another travel trend exploding among vacationers is grocery store tourism.)
Alaska is just one of the destinations travelers are visiting for a cool vacation. In fact, according to Travel Market Report, demand for Alaska is at an all-time high, with an estimated 1.64 million passengers set to board 696 Alaska cruises this year.
International destinations include Iceland, Scotland, and Finland. Latvia has also seen an increase in tourist numbers, according to Conde Nast Traveler. These destinations may not have tropical beaches or endless sun, but that’s not stopping tourists from heading there.
Reasons to enjoy Coolcation
The main appeal of a coolcation is, naturally, the more comfortable temperature at the destination. These places are especially appealing for people who live in warmer climates or are looking to escape the summer heat.
Reuters reported in July this year that heat records continue to be broken around the world. The European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service said in its monthly report that every month from June 2023 onwards has been ranked as the hottest on Earth.
But in these warm-weather destinations, the heat and humidity don’t have to ruin the fun. There’s still plenty of adventure to be had. From hiking to biking to kayaking, visitors can enjoy the outdoors without breaking a sweat.
Some destinations don’t have tropical climates but still offer beach access. For example, Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula is featured on many travel websites due to its mild climate, lush forests, and proximity to Lake Superior. These selling points draw visitors from all over the country.
